She has worked for advertising agencies including TPN and Marc USA. She is a former blogger for The Dallas Morning News' Texas Pages blog.

Shin Yu has served as a visiting writer at the University of Texas at Dallas and Southern Methodist University. In addition to teaching poetry workshops, she has read and evaluated poetry manuscripts for Grub Street, Inc. and The Writers Garret and helped to place her students' work in publications that have included Turning Wheel, XCP: Cross-Cultural Poetics, and HOW2.
